During a livestream earlier today, Atlus revealed Shin Megami Tensei V would be releasing on the Nintendo Switch. Although Atlus previously mentioned that there would be a Shin Megami Tensei game coming out on Nintendo’s hybrid console, many assumed it would be in the form of another spin-off title, especially since the working title for the game to this point was Shin Megami Tensei: Brand New Title. Developers confirmed that the upcoming title will be the 5th installment to the Atlus franchise in a new trailer revealed during a Shin Megami Tensei livestream.
The new trailer falls in line with the teaser that was shown during the Nintendo Switch stream back in January. SMTV appears to be set in a present-day Tokyo as the first few images show a modern train station that quickly pans off to a subway tunnel full of slain demons. We then catch a glimpse of a post-apocalyptic world as we see two characters being attacked by winged beasts. The trailer cuts off during the attack but we do see a character’s hand reach out to the sky in a splash of red, leaving us to assume that their death isn’t as imminent as it seems.
Although Atlus was willing to reveal that their working title is indeed Shin Megami Tensei V through a new trailer, they were still vague on the specific details. There’s still no release date and as of this posting, there is no word on whether the title is exclusive to the Switch or if it will be released on other platforms. There’s also no confirmation of the title being localized for western markets, with the game currently slated for a Japanese release. The possibility of it coming to the states is relatively high if previous SMT titles are anything to go by but even if it doesn’t, Switch owners around the world will still be able to play the title as all of its games are region free.
